Another
guy from Wolverhampton

We're all used to having a relief Manager in the pub and
for the past few weeks, Steve was at the helm. As I managed
to get a picture before he left I thought I'd scare you
all with it. He did a great job while he was in charge,
and we'll no doubt see him again when he's passing through
the area.

The
Tav Has a Make Over

Pete and Sylvia have been very busy over the last week
giving the pub a bit of new look. In fact it doesn't look
like the same place. I've already taken a few pictures of
changes they have made but as it is still a work in progress
I'm going to hold back a few weeks until the place completely
finished before I update the site with more photo's.
As you can see from the photo, the mirrors behind the bar
have now been covered up with chalk boards, and new flash
pumps have been fitted.

The biggest shock came yesterday though when I walked in
and the pub had changed colour. The horrible dirty flowery
wallpaper has been replaced by Terracota walls bringing
the pub into the new century and making it look a lot warmer.
John (our resident DJ) now has his own chalk board advertising
his fortnightly disco. This has brought hours of entertainment
as the artist who designed the boards decided to give John
his own nickname - DJ "Mad Hat" John, and no one
is sure where the 'Mad Hat' part came from. If you have
any good suggestions then let me know! We do however from
now on expect John to wear a mad hat every time he performs.

BAR-GAINS
- New Lower Prices
|
17/07/2001 |
 |
 |
As you have probably already noticed as you have been standing
at the bar waiting for your drinks, new pumps have been
fitted. To go along with these we also have some new products
and promotions starting very shortly.
Did you know Double's (on
selected spirits inc. Vodka) will be going down to £1.60,
and the price of a pint of Tetley
will also be dropping to £1.45.
The pub is now also stocking Guiness Ice, and J20's.
Plus don't forget that on a Monday night, free sandwichs
are now put on for the quiz.
To find out more about the new prices and products click
here or on the picture at the top of this page.

Plenty
to Report
|
17/07/2001 |
 |
|
Theres not really been much to report this year, but in
the past few weeks there has been a hive of activity in
the pub. Since our new managers have been in charge I've
lost count of the number of improvements that have been
made. For a start, the men may have noticed that we have
a new toilet seat and also the toilets have been painted.
They look loads better now there isn't old wallpaper dangling
by shreds off the wall. Other changes include clean (and
smaller) curtains, and a new curtain in the opening behind
the bar.
Everyone who takes part in the quiz on a Monday night had
a huge shock a few weeks a go when free sandwiches and crisps
were provided. Sylvia has been hard at work, and it appears
that this is to become a regular thing, so before you come
to the quiz make sure you don't have too big a tea. Very
shortly we'll be turning the quiz into a league. Every week
each teams scores will be recorded and a chart will be kept
on the pub wall as well as online. At the end of a three
month period, a prize will be awarded to the winning and
losing teams. Lets see if anyone can beat the Valiants.
John has now started up his fortnightly Disco's again.
Although I wasn't at the last one I hear that it was a great
sucess and the pub was busier than it has been for a long
time. There are even rumours that a semi naked Baz was spotted
dancing to Ricky Martin, and a mystery woman was dancing
on top of one of one of the tables. The next disco is on
Friday 27th June. For more details, ask behind the bar.
A few new changes can be expected to the web site as well.
Within the next month, the Message Board will return on
a trial basis. The board used to be lots of fun and gave
people the opportunity to stay in touch while they were
away working or at University. As long as people don't abuse
it, it will remain a permanent feature of the site.

Countdown

Wayne may have been at the pub for 6 months with us,
but many of you may not know that last Christmas he
appeared on the Channel 4 game show "Countdown".
Unfortunately he lost, but the guy who beat him did
go on to grand final. He's gonna kill me for posting
these pictures online because he doesn't know that I
have them. If you want to the
full pictures then click here. |

New
Managers and a New Pub
|
27/06/2001 |
 |
|
Over the past 18 months there has been very little
stability in the Tav. We've seen manager after manager
come and go but at long last our new permanent managers
have arrived. Earlier this week, Sylvia and Pete took
over the pub, and after speaking to them it seems
like they have some great idea's to turn the place
around. I'm not going to give anything away, but I'm
quite sure that over the next few months we will start
to see a lot of changes. In the short space of a week
we have already noticed new display cabinets behind
the bar, new bar towels, pool cues, and an unbelievable
improvement to the mens toilets (Yes blokes, the urinals
now flush).
Unfortunately we are also saying goodbye to Wayne,
who has been the Relief Manager at the pub for the
past 6 months. After a couple of weeks well deserved
break in Majorca, he is going back to reliefing pubs
round the Birmingham area. It has to be said that
the stool at the end of the bar will seem very empty
now he has gone. Anyway I'm sure everyone would like
to wish him the best of luck.
You may have noticed that the Pub was closed on Thursday
night. The reason behind it was that cleaners had
spent the day in the pub cleaning all of the carpets
and upholstery and everything was still wet at the
night. Maybe about 8 years overdue but we can't moan
as it is now possible to see the carpet, lets just
hope they follow suit and sort out the curtains and
the wallpaper.
If you haven't been up to the Tav for a few months,
then why not pop back in.

A
Pub Full Of Animals
|
03/06/2001 |
 |
|
While browsing the web the other day I decided to
type "Pennine Tavern" into the search engine
to see what results it came back with. To my surprise
we are linked from quite a few other sites. What did
shock me though was to find an entry for the Tav under
a Pet Supplies Website. It turns out that a company
has named a Hamster Cage after our wonderful pub (actually
I'd say its more a coincidence than anything). The
picture to the right shows the "Pennine Tavern
Animal Cage". If you would like to find out more
then follow this link to Pet-Express.co.uk

Lastest News
- The Tavern's Future
|
05/04/2001 |

Lets all face it, the Tav is nothing like it used to be
in its glory days. I remember just over a year ago when
you'd walk into the pub on a Friday or Saturday night and
it would be heaving. Who could forget the packed out Karaoke
nights, or the Fluffy Pig Racing, but now look at the place.
Lately on a Saturday night you've been able to count the
number of drinkers on both hands. Anyway over the past few
weeks interviews have been taking place to decide who will
take over as permanent Manager of the Pennine Tavern. It
has been announced today that a couple from Merseyside have
been appointed as the new Managers and will be taking over
in around a months time. I don't have any other info on
them just yet but as soon as I do I let you all know. Wayne
will be sticking around with us until then and I would just
like to wish him the best of luck as he continues reliefing
pubs back around the Birmingham area. Its not going to be
an easy job for the couple but I can only urge you to give
them a chance and all of your support.
On another note I was tidying my room the other day and
have come across 6 rolls of undeveloped film that have been
taken in the pub over the past year. I have no idea what
is on any of these but plan to get them developed quite
soon. If there are any decent pictures then I'll get them
scanned in and put them online. If you have been missing
the message board then don't panic because I'm in the process
of creating a guestbook to replace it. I've just had some
legal disclaimers drawn up so expect to see the thing come
online within the next week or so.
I'd also like to apologise for the delay in updating the
Locals page. I'm trying to get as many locals profiles written
before the section goes live. Another new feature to look
out for soon is going to be "Big Brother II".
After last years successful storyline we are hoping to take
things a stage further this time round and actually allow
you to vote fortnightly for who you wish to be evicted from
the "Big Tavern household". The story will then
be written refelecting your votes.

Sweet
Tooth

Hands-up thoses of you who remember Mel Haslam? If
you who are new to the pub, or were too young to be
coming in a year ago, Mel was one of our old barmaids
and worked in the Tav for just over a year. The reason
I mention her is that Mel and another regular "Mags"
are members of quite a successful Punk Ska band called
"Sweet Tooth" that are currently negotiating
a record deal. Since writing
this article the band has unfortunately split
however If you fancy checking out the type of music
that they played check out the band's website at www.sweet--tooth.co.uk

Sometimes its just too much hassle to walk up to
the pub to have a pint. Imagine on these occasions
if you had a bar in your own home. Well now you
can. I recently stumbled upon www.drinkstuff.com
which stocks everything you could possibly want
for your home bar, including Glasses, Signs, Optics,
Novelity Items and lots more. Why not check it out
as the prices are very reasonable and they deliver
within 3 working days.

The
New Look Website
|
14/03/2001 |
 |
|
Welcome back to the Pennine Tavern site. Firstly I'd like
to apologise that the site has been offline over the past
month. I decided that it was about time that it had a bit
of makeover and its taken a lot of time and effort to get
this done. There have been lots of changes, and although
there don't appear to be many new features available just
yet, there are plenty planned over the next month or two.
The locals section will soon be expanded to contain a lot
more of those familiar faces, and there will also be an
online personality questionnaire from which the results
will be used for updating profiles and handing out our new
monthly awards. One of these awards is "Drinker Of
The Month" which will be handed out on a monthly basis
to the person that has got the most plastered and done the
funniest and most embarassing things.
One thing that you may notice is that the messageboard
has been removed. It was originally added to the site so
that visitors to the site could participate in a bit of
friendly banter. Recently though some people became offended
by a number of messages that had been posted and decided
to that they wanted to hold me personally responsible for
them. I am a strong believer in freedom of speech and feel
that I do not have the right to start censoring peoples
messages and opinions. I am also not willing to accept responsibility
for the messages that people place on the board and the
hassle that goes along with it, and it is for these reasons
that I have taken the messageboard offline. I currently
have a few idea's of things to replace it but I'll tell
you more in a few weeks.
The website has been designed and tested with Internet
Explorer 5. Some features may not work if you are viewing
it through Netscape or on NTL TV-Internet. I'm in the process
of adding a new interface to the Photo Archive for these
users.
