I think the Meg must now hold the record for the most sports teams from one pub. Currently we have 1 football team, 2 pool teams, 2 crib teams, a Quiz Team, and a darts team. I'm hoping to compile information on all of the teams and hopefully get a few pics, but to start things off I have been sent lots of details about our football team courtesy of Lee Tilstone.

Finally and by popular request I've got round to adding the Christmas Eve photo's to the site. Christmas Eve is probably the strangest night of the year in the pub, as suddenly everyone who has moved away from Biddulph is suddenly back for Christmas. It was very nice seeing some old familiar faces. There aren't many photo's here as the pub was extremely full and it was very difficult to get around to take any. The few that I did take can be found here.

New Years Eve Photo's now online |
24/12/2003 |
 |
|
 |
|
The photo's from New Years Eve 2003 are now online. It seemed the Meg was the place to go this year and it definately wasn't a let down. "The Filmstars Fancy Dress Ball" was a huge success and at least half of the people in the pub made the effort to dress up. Yet again John and Bridder put on a disco and kept everyone dancing right into the New Year.

A few months ago I introduced a forum to the site but I think the fact that you had to register to use it put a few people off using it. Instead I've decided to replace it with this simple guestbook. You don't need to sign up to use it, just enter your thoughts, comments or messages and click post. Please don't abuse the guestbook. All posts are constantly monitored and will be removed if they are abusive or defamotory to anyone. Click here to use it. |

Website more popular than ever |
24/12/2003 |
 |
|
I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been using the website over the past year. Over the last 2 months the number of hits we have been receiving has gone through the roof, even to the point of us hitting our bandwidth limit imposed by our webhosts. After Christmas the site will be moving on a faster server and I hope to start adding streaming video and audio to it. I've also fallen behind with some of my updates recentely and have about 5 lots of photo's that need adding to the site. It used to be easy to keep this up-to-date but since Mick has been in charge there has been a lot more on in the pub. I promise I'll try and catch up over the Christmas period.

Christmas Quiz |
24/12/2003 |
 |
|
In keeping with tradition from the past few years, the last Monday before Xmas saw a very special Christmas Quiz. Both Ecke and Rob dressed up as Santa as an incentive to get the bar staff tips. The results of the 2003 Quiz League were also announced on the night and prizes were awarded to the winning teams.
I'll post these online very shortly with a few more photo's. |

Meg Go Karting Championship |
24/12/2003 |
 |
|
On 14th December a group of very hungover Meg regulars made their way over to Warrington for a morning of Go Karting fun. 19 drivers took part in a championship that consisted of each driver taking part in 5 heats, and then a grand overall final for the best 8 drivers. Each heat took place over 3.5 laps of the course. Click here to see the results of the event and some photo's |

The Official Opening Of The Roaring Meg |
16/12/2003 |
 |
|

|
|
3rd December 2003 saw the Official Opening of the all new Roaring Meg. The night was set to coincide with the turning on of the pub Christmas Lights and a Race Night. The event was compared by Signal Radio sports Commentator George Andrews.
An auction was also held for signed Celtic and Rangers football shirts and a signed Zidane and signed Veron shirt. In total just over £600 was raised for local charities including the Meadows school, Biddulph In Bloom and the Roaring Meg football team. Click here to see a couple of photo's from the night. |

Walking into the Meg this Christmas is guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit. Mick, Chris and Sam have gone all out with decorations and lights this year and I don't think there would be room for any more if they tried. It makes a nice change from the couple of baubles we've gotten used to the past few years. A snowman competition was also held to see who could build the best 5ft tall snowman to decorate the shelving in the pub. For all the Christmas news and more pictures click here.

Grease is the word... or at least it was in the Meg on Saturday Night. In the second themed night of the month the Meg regulars celebrated the musical Grease with a special Grease/50s night. Although not as many dressed up as on Halloween, plenty did make the effort, especially all of the bar staff who looked fantastic. Yet again DJ John was back spinning his wheels of cheese and by the end of the night literally the whole pub was up dancing - many on the chairs and tables. Click here for the photo's |

Pizza Special (Taken from News Of The Meg Issue 5) |
18/11/2003 |

|

|
|
Now well into its second month of having food available the Roaring Meg is serving up some really tasty dishes. Last Wednesday especially to coincide with National Pizza week a metre' a pizza was on offer with many interesting and varied toppings. Just one problem though, the Italian Chef had taken a spontaneous trip back to Italy, never mind Mick did a sterling job. Unfortunately Ecke had the chilli-topped pizza and according to his emails his backside was a little sore the next day. Mick reckons that had nothing to do with the Pizza! Apart from this little mishap the standard of food is excellent and extremely good quality and value . |

A Roaring Megs' Regular - Sons Honour |
18/11/2003 |
 |
In a triumph for local honour and celebrity, Sam, Daz Carters lad had the tremendous honour of leading out the England team last Sunday against Denmark . After entering a competition, Sam was one of the victorious youngsters and the drinkers in the Meg cheered as he walked out on to the pitch with Frank Lampard. From what I hear he had a fantastic day and made everyone in Biddulph proud. There will be some photo's in the chronicle this week so I'll get them scanned in very soon. Well done Sam!!

Gay Welders Mystery Oven Glove Incident (Taken from News Of The Meg Issue 5) |
18/11/2003 |
 |
|
In a surprising shock incident one of the infamous Roaring Meg Gay Welders* mysteriously appeared with an oven glove on his hand following a drunken incident after a good Friday night out at the Meg. Carl, who wants to remain anonymous told this paper that he couldn't get his key in the door so he promptly battered through the glass without his welders gloves on and ended up in hospital, we wish him a speedy recovery, and hope his wound doesn't fester! (Ouch).
*Disclaimer - Gay as in happy, and not homosexual!! |

Halloween Disco |

On saturday 1st November the Roaring Meg looked like something from a horror movie when Mick and Chris threw a Fancy Dress Halloween party. About half of the people who came made the effort to dress up and the pub was packed all night. Entertainment was provided by resident DJ's John and Bridder, who even threw a spontaneous fancy dress competion. To find out more about the night and to see the pictures click here |

No need to go home - the pub now serves food |
05/11/2003 |
 |
|
The biggest and best thing to happen at the pub for along time - the pub now serves food. When you walk in you can't help but notice the massive menu on the wall. The menu ranges from simple snacks such as Baguettes, Sandwiches, Jacket Potato etc.. through to evening meals of Steak, and Chicken. I've had quite a few meals up there so far and I have nothing but good things to say about the quality of the food.
Burger and Chips at £2.50 is way cheaper than Maccy D's, tastes nicer, and you can even buy a nice pint to go along with it.
To see a copy of the current menu click on the image to the right*
*Please note the menu changes regularly so it may differ in the pub than what is on the website

The Halloween Quiz |
05/11/2003 |

|
On Monday 27th November Ecke and Rob put on a special Halloween Quiz. Both of them dressed up (in the most shocking fancy dress you have ever seen) to raise money for charity and in total raised £57 toward Cystic Fibrosis research. As well as the normal quiz lots of people took part in an apple bobbing competition and a balloon blowing competition. Read more... |

Messageboard now online |
21/10/2003 |
 |
|
When I first started this website 4 years ago, one of its best features was the messageboard. It was extremely popular and received 1000's of posts within the two years it ran for. However all good things come to an end and due to the amount of abuse that it started receiving I was sadly forced to shut it down.
After 2 years I've finally decided to bring it back and have setup a completely new messageboard system. Unlike the original board, you have to register to use this one and so hopefully won't be as open for abuse as last time. Give it ago and get chatting. Visit the message board (Now offline)

This picture appeared in the Biddulph Chronicle a couple of weeks ago. On the 7th September, Chris, Sam and Henry took part in the charity sponsored walk of the new Biddulph Bypass. Henry looked just the part with his colourful running outfit on (which this picture doesn't give justice to as its in black and white). From what I've heard they raised about £200.
Gordon Banks and the ‘Staffordshire Lion’ (errmmm!!) started the walk at 1.30 pm on Sunday 7th September from the Meadows School end of the road. The walk progressed to the new roundabout at Thames Drive and return to the Meadows; a total of 1 1/2 miles.
The funds raised from the sponsorship money were be donated, by the Rotary Club, to The Donna Louise Trust, Douglas McMillan Homes, the Local Red Cross and to Rotary Charities.

Sarah's 21st |

On the 1st August, we celebrated the second Sarah Wright of the year's 21st Birthday. Everyone piled in the Tav for a party and disco which was provided by local Tav DJ's John and Bridder. For those of you that don't know her - Sarah is Rowans (one of our fine barmen) girl friends.

The Roaring Meg |
27/08/2003 |
 |
|

|
Who remembers the Tav when it was the Roaring Meg?? For those of you that are too young to remember or are not from the area, when the pub first opened in 1974 it was called "The Roaring Meg" after the cannon that partially destroyed Biddulph Old Hall. In 1991 after a refurb it was renamed to the Pennine Tavern.
If rumours are to be believed the Tav may soon well be the Roaring Meg once again. It was announced at Monday Nights Quiz, that the quizzes would soon stop in the Pennine Tavern, but they would be continuing in the Roaring Meg. In my opinion a name change back to the Meg would be superb as it never should have been changed in the first place. It would also be great to see the pub back with its original name for it's 30th Birthday next year. I'll post again when I find out more. |

A Brand New Start |
27/08/2003 |
 |
|
Well the biggest news of the last month is that Mick and Chris are leaving the Roebuck to take over permanentely at the Tav. Its a sad loss for the Buck but its our gain. Over the next few months we're going to see some of the biggest changes in the pub for the last 12 years. Inside information has it that the back store room is being converted to a kitchen so they can start providing food during the day. The whole pub is going to be rewired and new lighting will be put in. The back of the bar is being done up, and who knows we may even end up with some new chairs. Its going to be very exciting period and as work is carried out on the Tav I promise to keep you all posted here and will try to add some pictures.

Ecke's 100th Quiz (28th July 2003) |
05/07/2003 |
 |
|
It doesn't seem like 5 minutes since I took over running the quiz, but on the 28th July I celebrated my 100th Monday night Quiz in the Pennine Tavern. The night was probably the busiest quiz that the pub has ever seen, and everyone there had a fantastic time, and would probably agree with me that I got suitably embarrassed.
Rob and Glenis provided an outstanding buffet and Rob had organised a round where each team got to ask me a question, just to see how good I am (take a look at the picture to the right for the answer to this question).

Tonys
50th and the Dutch Lads |
23/04/2003 |
 |
Although we thought he was a lot
older Tony celebrated his 50th
Birthday last week. He started
at 11.30am in the Roebuck and
progressed to the Tav with a mission
to get plastered. He succeeded
very nicely!!! Unawares to him,
Mick and Ryan had also organised
a stripper which turned out to
be more of a punishment for him
than a present. After yanking
his bottle and giving him a good
whipping with Rob Walmsley's belt
Tony was left to sleep for the
rest of the night in one of the
big chairs. Check out the pictures.
Sunday was also a very special
moment in Micks mission to turn
the pub around - I've not seen
it so busy for 4 years. The weekend
marked the annual visit of the
Dutch Lads (some of Micks mates).
Around 50 of them came across
to England for a trip to Blackpool
and a game of footy with Micks
hand picked team. The final result
was 1-0 to the dutch, and afterwards
everyone came back to the Tav
to sample Chris's buffet and get
drunk. Entertainment was provided
in the form of a Karoke disco
with the majority of the pub joining
in the football anthems. Unfortunately
there aren't any photo's as I
was too drunk to take any.

Ex-Landlord
Gets Hitched |
23/04/2003 |
 |
Most people reading
this will probably remember Alan Stewart
who ran the Tav for a number of years
up until 1998. On Saturday he got
married to Maureen and as an ex-landlord
where better to have the reception
than with all their friends in the
Tav escpecially as they actually met
in the pub two years ago at Ron and
Lorraines wedding. The reception kicked
off at 2pm and DJ John "Mad Hat"
Cornelius returned once again to provide
the disco. Both Alan and Maureen seemed
to have a great day, and as an added
bonus we even got to see Carl wearing
a shirt!! Photo's are online here |

Sarah's 21st Fancy Dress Party |
04/04/2003 |
 |
Although this event wasn't held at the Tav, it was a birthday party for one of our favourite barmaids and also attended by a large number of Tavern regulars. The party was to celebrate Sarah's 21st birthday and everyone who attended turned up in fancy dress. These are some of the funniest pictures you will ever see, especially Spence as Jackass's Party Boy. Read the full story and see the 100ish pics here.

1999 Pictures finally back online
|
04/04/2003 |
 |
When I updated the site a year ago I never got round to updating the pictures from 1999. I posted a message saying that they'd be back online in a few days, unfortunately they got forgotten about until someone mentioned them to me the other day. I've now finally updated all of the pages and re-uploaded all of the photographs. Re-live the memories from my 21st Birthday with Penny Crayon, Zoes BBQ, The 70/80's Disco, our infamous halloween party, Skel's Bank Holiday funday (where we popped the bouncy castle), and who could forget the very champagny night of the Millenium.

St
Patricks Day Quiz
|
19/03/2003 |
 |
| |
On Monday
17th March we held a special St. Patricks
Day quiz hosted by both Ecke and Rob.
You would have thought that somebody
would have learnt that when me and
Rob and free wine get together crazy
things happen. We had loads of special
prizes to give away including Guiness
glasses and T-Shirts, and one way
to win them was to take part in my
spur of the moment Irish Jigging competion.
We had 10 people get up and give it
a go.. and these included both Cilla
and Spence. It had to be the funniest
thing I have seen in the pub for a
long time. Mick donated a free pint
to everyone who took part, and in
the end we couldn't pick an overall
winner so we gave them all prizes.
Pictures coming soon.
Don't forget the quiz
starts every Monday night at 9pm |

Day
At The Races
|
19/03/2003 |
 |
| Saturday 14th March
was the day of Midlands Grand National
at Uttoxeter race track and as normal
Big Rob had organised a trip to go.
I arrived in the Tav at 10am and had
my breakfast (a povy's oatcake and
a bottle of Smirnoff Ice) and then
about 30 of us piled on to the coach
ready for a day at the races. The
trip there proved to be quite eventful
- our normal coach driver Mike was
out on a different job and his replacement
had a very unique driving style. Lets
just say that he liked kerbs...and
fences....and houses... and his braking
foot seemed to have a mind of its
own. |

Pugwash places
a bet
|
And so the betting commenced
and after 7 races most of us were
around £50 down (all except
Mick, Shaz and Glenis). On the brightside
though we actually left the bar this
time for long enough to watch a couple
of races outside. Later in the day
we all headed back to the Tav for
a buffet tea. By this time Rob was
so plastered he kept falling off his
stool and had to be carried home.
Check
out the pictures here. Even pugwash
made an appearance again.

Your
Mother
|
13/03/2003 |
 |
Have you heard about the latest
craze that was invented right
here at home in the Tav. A quiet
drunken night in the pub resulted
in the invention of a new language
called "The Klizt" (with
a silent Z) by Rowan, Pete and
Ugzy. Pete has setup a website
to help spread more information
about "The Klizt" and
"Your Mother". Check
it out at www.your-mother.co.uk
and learn how to motherise as
well as this...
Ugzy said whilst driving: It only
works at junctions.
Pete repiles: So does your mother.

More
news ...

13/03/2003 |
 |
Well Micks now been
with us for about two months and
what a difference its made. I
have never seen the pub as busy
as its been the last few weeks
since the days of Skel. The prices
have come back down and you can
now even buy baps and baguettes
at the weekend. Even the Cockles
on offer behind the bar have gone
down well. Mick held his first
Curry night, last night and all
I can say is his Madras was superb
(expect this morning when my arse
was on fire). I've been hearing
a lot of things on the grapevine
of whats going to be happening
in the next few months and as
soon as I find out anything definate
I'll post it here.

New
Landlord....
|
03/12/2002 |
 |
I was getting so
good at updating this site on
time, but then Christmas happened
and I seem to have fallen way
behind with things. Well yet again
its been a busy few months - the
main news being that from Tuesday
we're getting ourselves a new
landlord - I'll explain more about
that in a second. In other news
- Christmas was a good laugh except
for the fact that the heating
in the pub broke down at New Year
and we had emergency heaters sent
from the brewery to try and keep
the place warm. They worked fine
unless you stood directly in front
of them for any length of time,
it which case you walked away
looking like you'd just spent
2 days on a Sunbed.
And now
for the questions that everyones
being asking : Whats happening
with the pub?...
There are two sides
to the company that own the Tav
- The Spirit Group and Punch Taverns.
Until recently the Tav was owned
and ran by the Spirit Group who
employ a manager to come in and
run the pub for them. It has now
been transfered over to Punch
Taverns who lease out the pubs.
From Tuesday our new landlord
is going to be Mick from the Roebuck.
I'm sad to see Mike go, but as
for a new landlord coming into
the pub I couldn't think of anyone
better than Mick to come along
and turn the pub around. I don't
know what he has planned and what
he's going to be doing with the
place but the next few months
should prove quite interesting.
